As a facilitator of my students educational opportunities it is my responsibility to
foster collaboration, establish critical thinking, and to give students the ability to
formulate their own thoughts and feelings, while also teaching the essential elements
needed to live in a complex global society. My educational ideology falls in-line with a
progressivist and social reconstructionist view. I believe in educational opportunities that
encompass what is important in my students lives, while also relating issues of
education with their real-world counterparts. In an increasingly globalized society it is
important for students to see that they are going to be interacting with cultures and
issues at a rate that the past generations could never imagine. It is for this reason that
students need an education that addresses the relativity to their lives along with the
prevailing issues of the time.
This type of educational learning will be achieved by using many different
techniques including collaboration, critical thinking, sense of community, and the
establishment of rules. In a classroom setting it is important to understand what makes
each other different while, more importantly, realizing what makes them similar. By
students interacting with the people around them from a community sense to a global
sense is a fundamental aspect to the human condition. Fostering collaboration
inside the classroom and out in the community brings the importance of working
together to the forefront. By working together students accomplish objectives more
efficiently and with greater overall understanding than if done individually. This also
brings about an important life skill that is extremely valuable no matter what future path
they choose.
To foster this level of collaboration my classroom needs to be a welcoming
environment. To create community in my classroom it is important that I know my
students lives and what they go through. For my students, it is essential that they know
their peers lives as well. There will be an emphasis on trust and respect to ensure every
student is accountable for classroom learning. Students would be expected to follow the
necessary rules that are set in place at the beginning of their time with me. If students
choose not to act in the way that was previously agreed upon, then there will be swift
and fitting consequences.
The establishment of a classroom structure that supports critical thinking,
collaboration, community, and a heightened awareness of the life around them; is the
most important educational opportunities that my students will walk away with.
Education is a key component to a responsible society that cares not just for the
individual but what it means to be a responsible global community. For me, these are
the aspects to education that go beyond the classroom and will define the interactions
of people no matter who they are.
